Earlier this week Austin Niswander became the first commitment in Toledo's 2013 football recruiting class. TheRocketNation caught up with Austin to get his take on Toledo and his commitment to head coach Matt Campbell.
"Toledo started recruiting me around a month ago," Niswander told TheRocketNation.
New Toledo defensive coordinator Tom Matukewicz wasted no time in starting to recruit Austin after coach "Tuke" added to the Rocket coaching staff. That resulted in an offer to Austin on Monday. Tuesday night Austin made it official with his commitment to the Rockets.
The first commitment in Toledo's 2013 recruiting class, Niswander knew he wanted to be a Rocket right away.
"The coaching staff was tremendous," Niswander noted when giving reasons for his commitment to Toledo. He added, "the facilities are top notch in the MAC, and they have a great business school, which is what I want to major in."
The 6-2, 195 pound athlete is being recruited to play linebacker or safety at Toledo. He has 4.62 speed in the forty yard dash.
With still a year of high school left, Austin is focusing on working out in the weight room and helping his team to return to the playoffs. A 9-1 season last year earned the school a playoff berth for just the fifth time in the history of Findlay High School.
Niswander has visited with both head coach Matt Campbell and defensive coordinator Tom Matukewicz.
"Coach Campbell is a great young and energetic coach that will bring many MAC Championships to Toledo," said Niswander. He added, "Coach Tuke has a bright football mind and I feel like he will create a great defense at Toledo."
With still eleven months to go before signing day, there is a lot of time for Niswander to be influenced by other schools, but he refuted that thought right away. "I am solidly committed to Toledo," Austin responded.
Niswander is also a very good student in the classroom with a 3.4 GPA.
