August 29, 2013This Saturday afternoon Toledo will travel to the Swamp in Gainesville, Florida to take on the Gators of the SEC. An 11 win team in 2012 and a #10 preseason ranking for 2013, the Gators will become the first ever SEC football opponent for the University of Toledo.
Last year fellow Mid-American Conference member Bowling Green gave Florida a bit of a scare in the Gators' season opener, before Florida pulled away with a 27-14 victory. Bowling Green has a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and they were tied 14-14 half way through the 3rd quarter.
But that game may be a negative for Toledo. Florida will not be overlooking the Rockets, if for no other reason than because of that game with Bowling Green last year.
Toledo has the horses on offense to put some points on the board, but does a rather young defense have the horses to slow down the Florida offense? With some of the injuries Florida has sustained it is possible.
So it's prediction time. Toledo head coach Matt Campbell is one of the brightest young minds in the game. He will have Toledo ready to play and give the Gators a game. The game of football is an emotional game and things can snowball in a hurry. The key for Toledo will be to keep mistakes to a minimum and keep the game close heading into the 4th quarter. If Campbell and company can do that, this will be anyone's game to win.
I think that Toledo will keep the game close. Florida is an elite football program and I believe they will ultimately wear down Toledo. However, the nation will take notice of the performance by the Rockets. Their offense is loaded and they will score points. They might be a recruit or two and some experience short of winning this game, but they will not be going down without a good fight. And if Florida does not take notice, an upset is lurking.
